Well, it was coming. I knew eventually I would be outraged by this and here it is. Today while purchasing a small juice to quench my thirst, I was “greeted” at the counter by one of the most wonderful people in the world: disgruntled gas station clerks. Now, I don’t want to generalize. I haven’t always had bad experiences with clerks. Most have been friendly and welcoming. We’ve all been on road trips and have needed directions at one point or another. Doesn’t it feel wonderful to be helped by a friendly clerk? It sure does. But today, here’s what happened. I went to the counter with my juice and she said “good morning”. But not in that helpful, friendly tone. So, she rang me up and I gave her a bill. The bill required her to do a little math and give me a couple of bucks in change. So, what happened? She gave me a look like I had run over a puppy over and over. She was disgusted that I gave her a bill requiring her to think. Hey, if you didn’t want to count, MAYBE YOU SHOULDN’T BE WORKING THE CASH REGISTER!!! If you don’t like your job, find another one that you do like. Don’t condemn the world to your eternal suffering. I don’t always love my job, but I still have to smile and do it. Anyone with half a brain can do it. But for some reason, cash register clerks at local gas stations feel that doesn’t apply to them. Kiddies, to avoid this fate, stay in school. Seriously. Learn how to do something, become a professional. Then, you might not have to pretend to be nice and force a customer never to return to your place of business.
